Ludum Dare 23!

Hey everyone!

Last weekend was just super awesome…it was Ludum Dare 23 – The ultimate 48 hour compo. The theme was ‘Tiny World’ and I was in this time (my 2nd LD). I chose to make a game on flash platform using the Flashpunk game library. The game is called SAVE ME in which you control a cute alien which is attacked by some evil species. You can jump on planets and even hop from one planet to another collecting the game power-ups.

Some points about this LD for me were:

  • Gave more time and priority to gameplay.
  • Drew quite a lot pixel art for the first time (it was fun).
  • Tried some new game mechanics.
  • Integrated almost all game elements (sounds really matter).

Play and rate my entry.

Now that the compo is over, I have played around 60 entries out which here are my best picks (in no order):

  • Memento XII – deepnight: As always, this entry by deepnight has mind blowing graphics. The pixel art is really good and gives a very nice feel to the game. Though being a point and click adventure type, I was not that a fan of the gameplay.
  • Astro Break – hulahulahest: This was a really well made contra style game. I loved the sprites and the whole idea of having a shoot’emup on a lil planet was greet. A game to play for powerups!
  • Soul Searchin’ – MaximSchoemaker: A 100% into the the theme entry. A very well executed idea where the player can be shrunk and grown to clear levels inside levels…A nice level design too.
  • Nook – PoV: Another shrink/grow type jam entry which wonderful graphics and animation. The game is fun to play and effects are neat.

So go ahead, play them, rate them and be cool :)

If you wanna check out my game’s source, it can be found on github.

Till next time, cya!

JIDE source on Github now!

After an year, I have finally put the JIDE source on Github.

Whats JIDE? Well, its an Integrated Development Environment for Java language. Its an application I made as my major project in final year. JIDE is written in C++ and uses wxWidgets library for GUI. It offers features like syntax highlighting, simple to use interface and easy configuration for new programmers.

So here it is:

Fork it. Play it.

Cheers!

Windows 8 on my Slate

Hey there!

I recently received my meego tablet as a contest prize from Intel. Its an EXOPC slate with an awesome configuration. It came preinstalled with a development release of Meego and had a quite a lot issues with the functionality and UX. So I decided to experiment with the slate and begin trying different OS on it.

The first in the row was the latest build of Meego. Much better than what came preinstalled, but still not there. Applications hung up in between, there were glitches in the UI and stuff…

Next was Linux Mint 11. Worked quite well on the tablet but multitouch support was not present. After researching a bit I found the multitouch framework (uTouch) which is under development by Canonical for Unity.

So in order to test uTouch I switched to Ubuntu 11.10. Unity in Ubuntu was a much better experience on the tablet as compared to Mint. It felt closer to a real tablet OS.

That was not it. The best was still to come. Finally I tried installing Windows 8 developer preview on the tab. At first it didn’t install as I was trying the x64 edition. But x86 one installed just fine. The new Metro UI in windows 8 is a masterpiece. Though the current edition of windows 8 still has plenty of bugs, the experience of using it on a touch device is simply awesome.

I leave now with some pics of Windows 8 running on the slate. Will wait for the final release of Window 8 :)

Cheers!
